About Me

Background

Thank you so much for visiting my website! My name is Amber Thomas and I have been blind since 2003 and fell in love with everything to do with technology when I got my first Mac in 2012. In 2015, I began my Computing Science degree at Vancouver Island University, and ended up completing it through Athabasca University in January 2023. This degree taught me so much and I began my quest to make the world a more accessible place.

I am constantly coming across websites and apps that don't work properly or at all for screen readers and it is therefore my goal to fix and create as many accessible websites and apps as I can. I am always happy to answer questions and help you learn everything there is to know about screen reader accessibility and living with sight loss.

Something else I have found frustrating is being able to find accurate information and tools for living with sight loss. I have never been able to find a centralized location for all of the information I was looking for, so I decided to tell people how I see it.

If you are looking for tips and tools, funny and informative stories, and insight into my designs and making things accessible, you'll find it in my blog. You may learn some things, have some laughs, and get a sneak peek of my life and How I see It! Oh, and in case you didn't catch from the main Vizability page, I love frogs!

Skills

From the moment I started learning HTML, I fell in love with it. It also had the benefit of being accessible from the very first button as long as you followed proper coding standards. The more I worked with it, The more I understood that the possibilities were endless with the HTML foundation and scripting, databases, and package managers to transform my code into whatever I wanted. Below are the frameworks, languages, and tools I have learned and use regularly.
