Vision Beyond Sight

Envision Accessibility

Thank you for viziting my home of all things accessible. It has been my goal to make the digital world more friendly for disabled users, provide tech training, and design apps and websites that are as beautiful to a screen reader user as they are to a sighted user.

As a side note, all of my pages include a neat new feature that I have implemented. If you are blind, low vision, or sighted and want to see what I'm talking about, click on the banner in the top of any page to get a description of what that page actually looks like.

Even though screen readers don't recognize text colour, background colours, fancy borders, and many other attributes of a beautiful webpage, that doesn't mean screen reader users don't want to "see" them!

Accessible Websites

Designing a beautiful and accessible website should be a goal for your company. Whether you have blind clientele or not, it is important that they are able to access your website if they choose to look you up. Having a website that works seamlessly for them might be the edge you need to gain their trust as a new client.

Not only is it good practice to have an accessible website, in more and more locations, it is becoming a legal requirement. Check out some of the previous designs that I have consulted on or built from scratch to see what a beautiful accessible website looks like so you can snap one up for yourself!

Accessible Apps

When the world of apps exploded several years ago, accessibility was kind of an afterthought. Many of the apps I come across in my day to day life are difficult to use with a screen reader or 100% inaccessible. That is why another of my goals is to create business or other apps that are a joy to use for sighted and non-sighted individuals alike.

Take a look at the collection of apps that I have consulted on or built from scratch and think about if an app is what your business needs. An app gives a user instant access to your business right on the home screen of their phone without having to navigate to your website. Don't hide from the world of apps! Fewer clicks to reach you means more activity for your business.

If you aren't interested in an app for your business but have a cool other app idea, I would love to hear about it and work with you to make your idea a reality. Ideas are the drive behind the app world, don't let your great ideas go without reward because you aren't able to get it to market by yourself.

How I See It

Have you ever wondered how a blind or visually impaired person navigates life? When you first came to this section, what did you see? A screen reader user saw the same eye catching image as you but they saw the alt text that I assigned to it:

But they just as easily could have seen nothing at all, or something like this:

That's why attention to features such as alt text are so crucial for screen reader users. Let me show you how I see it in my blog of all things to do with living with a visual impairment. Learn how I approach design in an accessible way, and what I use in my day to day life to "see" the world around me.
